上海材料研究所是国内最早开展无损检测工作的单位之一，是中国机械工程学会无损检测分会、中国无损检测学会无损检测人员资格认证机构、机械系统无损检测人员培训中心、全国无损检测标准化技术委员会、全国焊接标准化技术委员会焊缝检测分技术委员会秘书处、 《无损检测》杂志等学术组织的挂靠单位。

机械工业无损检测中心（上海材料研究所无损检测事业部）继承了上海材料研究所六十多年来在材料测试技术方面的经验和成就，在国内外同行中有较高的信誉和影响。中心主要从事材料无损检测/检验、无损检测人员的资格培训、无损检测能力验证提供者、无损检测仪器校准等技术服务工作。
